Gdańsk is a city with a rich and complex history. It was once a part of the Hanseatic League, a powerful trading alliance that included cities such as Hamburg, Bremen, and Lübeck. In the 17th century, Gdańsk was one of the most important ports in Europe, and was a major hub for trade and commerce.
The city was also a center of political and social upheaval in the 20th century. In the aftermath of World War II, Gdańsk was a key site of the Solidarity movement, which was instrumental in bringing about the collapse of communism in Poland. In the 1980s, the movement’s leader, Lech Wałęsa, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.
