Tower Bridge is a historic and iconic landmark in London, England. Located on the River Thames, the bridge connects the boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Southwark. It was built in the late 19th century to provide a crossing over the river for pedestrians, vehicles, and river traffic.
The construction of Tower Bridge began in 1886 and was completed in 1894. It was designed by Sir Horace Jones, the City of London’s architect, and John Wolfe Barry, a civil engineer. The bridge consists of two towers that are connected by two walkways and a bascule, a type of drawbridge that can be raised to allow ships to pass through.
One of the most unique features of Tower Bridge is its Victorian Gothic design, which features medieval-style turrets and intricate stonework. The bridge is also adorned with four statues of legendary British historical figures: Sir Francis Drake, Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Robert Peel, and Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson.
Despite its beautiful design, Tower Bridge was built with practicality in mind. The bascule was designed to be raised in just a few minutes, allowing river traffic to pass through quickly and efficiently. In fact, the bridge can be raised as many as 1,000 times a year.
